According to en.wikipedia.org one light year is
9,460,730,472,580.8 km, or 9.461E12 km, and represents the distance that light will travel in a vacuum in one year's time.

For an example of something small, a nanometer is one billionth of a meter, or 1E-9 m. From the website www.nrdc.org
it is approximately "the length that a man's beard will grow in the time it takes him to lift a razor to his face."
