I means if i suppose to receive a work permit first before they grant me the green card.

It is possible that you may receive the work permit as soon as you are given a social security number. This is usually a good sign that the green card is on the way. Many times once you have been approved for the green card, INS will issue a social security number along with a temporary work permit.
