The main goal of the Republican party was to encumber the growing spread of slavery. This was one of the chief reasons why most of the members of the Republican party were from the North and West as most of the people in the South were staunch advocates of slavery. Another factor that the Republican party wanted to get accomplished was to pass high tariffs laws so as to protect the industries of the North because lower tariffs would encourage imports from Europe for the South. Taking these two crucial factors into consideration, the Republican party needed a candidate, who would advocate these two points with convincing persuasion. And they got just the right and the most suitable candidate in the form of Abraham Lincoln, who was a lawyer from Illinois. The Republican party henceforth nominated Abraham Lincoln as the next Senate candidate for the elections in the year 1858.
