What Is Infrared Data Association?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Infrared Data Association is an industry-sponsored organization that was set up in the early 90s to create and maintain international standards in both hardware and software that is used in infrared communication links. Using this form of transmission, a cable connection is not needed for the transfer of information from a laptop or PDA to a desktop computer or to use a printer.

IrDA functions like a TV remote, requiring line-of-sight transmission. Products using the technology began to appear in 1995. One of the first printers designed with an in built IrDA port was the LaserJet 5P. Infrared data communication is vital to wireless data communication due to the increased popularity and dependence on laptop computers, digital cameras, mobile telephones, and other devices.
