What Is An Anion Gap?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The term 'anion gap' describes a scientific process which works as a help in the differential diagnosis that happens during metabolic acidosis. The process has its particular uses and it represents the unmeasured anions present in plasma. These anions have different effects in different types of metabolic acidosis.

The function that anion gap measurement serves is to allow the clinician to concentrate on the possible causes of the metabolic acidosis of the patient. You can better understand it with the following example: If the metabolic acidosis occurs in the patient but has a normal anion gap, then you can rule out the conditions of anion gap being the reason for acidosis. And in that case the clinician has to find out some other reasons for the phenomenon.
