I wash and dry the colored towels and they still smell musty. How can I get rid of this smell?

My suggestion is to add borax to your wash. You can probably find a box of "20 Mule Team" borax in the laundry aisle of your grocery store, so just follow the directions.

By the way, borax is also great for getting odours out of drains, dustbins, all sorts of places. You can mix equal portions - say about 3/4 cup each - of borax and baking soda, pour the mixture in your drain or disposal followed with a pot of boiling water. It will really help get rid of nasty smells. Sprinkle about a half cup in the bottom of your kitchen waste can to control bad smells, too.

Finally, you can use borax to make a great cleaner for all sorts of things around the house. As you can tell, I think this old-fashioned product is far too under-used... And in my humble opinion, far better than the artificial perfume cover-ups that have taken over the marketplace.

You might add 1/2 cup of vinegar to your laundry. When dried the vinegar smell disappears and neutralizes the odor.

You can try washing them in plain water with a cup of white vinegar added to the water.  Vinegar is all I use for a softener.  It works good and leaves no odor behind.

You might add a cup of baking soda to your wash water before washing towels for odor.

I always add a touch of bleach to my colored towels.  It doesn't hurt them.  Maybe a 1/4 cup or less.  Works every time and my towels are fine.  I pour the bleach into the bleach compartment in the washer not directly on the towels

Spray them with fabreeze. It is amazing how it gets smells out... My car leaks when it rains hard and the carpet sometimes smells musty.. I spray it with fabreeze and it gets the smell out.

Try adding just a little bleach (not enough to fade towels) or try some ammonia, either one should work.

you can use a powder bleach that you can use on colored clothes, put it in the water not on the clothes,it won't bleach them or stain like a liquid bleach.Hope this helps.

Bleaching them certainly works, but if you don't want to do this, then a spray like the already-mentioned Fabreeze is a good option.

If it's musky, then it's moldy and you can't use bleach.  Microban is the only product I know of that removes mold without hurting the color.  Good luck to you!!
