How Many Police Academy Films Are There?

There are currently seven films in The “Police Academy” series.

The first film was released in 1984 and the plot centred around a group of recruits who are trained up for the police force. The main character of the film is Carey Mahoney, who joins the force against his own will as a punishment. Throughout the film, Mahoney tries to get himself thrown out of the force, but decides to stay when he falls for another recruit. After working together with the rest of the recruits, Mahoney manages to graduate the academy and remains there.

The second film, “Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment”, was released a year later, in 1985. In this instalment, Mahoney and the other new graduates of the academy work together to fight a number of criminals.

The third instalment, “Police Academy 3: Back in Training” appeared in 1986. This instalment was one of the highest grossing films of that year. It features many of the same characters from the first and second instalments as well as characters introduced in the second film.

The fourth film, “Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol”, was released in 1987 and once again featured all the same characters as the previous instalments.

A fifth instalment, “Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach”, followed a year later, in 1988. This time, however, the character Carey Mahoney did not appear in the film and many new characters were introduced to the series.

The sixth instalment, “Police Academy 6: City Under Siege”, was released in 1989. Many of the characters, apart from Mahoney, were featured as well as a collection of new ones.

The seventh film, “Police Academy: Mission to Moscow”, was released in 1994. This was the largest gap so far between the films. The large gap may have been what led to the film being the least successful of the series. A few popular characters that had previously appeared in the other instalments were also missing from the film.  

A “Police Academy 8” is currently in production and will feature many of the characters that have appeared in the previous films, including Carey Mahoney.
