This depends. For south and southeast asian nations, you need a visa. For most western nations (UK, france, America, Canada, Russia, etc) you can get a visa upon arrival, although it is a tourist visa and only good for one month- then you have to leave thailand and re-enter (which is usually pretty easy- hop across the border with laos for an afternoon and get a new visa when you come back, etc)
