Memorial Day basically is an American federal holiday which is held on the last Monday of May. It was initially known as the Decoration Day. This holiday honours American men and women who have expired in military service for their country.
It was originally started to honour Union armed forces that expired during the American Civil War. Post World War I, it extended to incorporate those who had expired in any form of war or military action. One of the longest existing practices is the running of the Indianapolis 500, which has been in combination with Memorial Day since 1911.
A lot of people observe this holiday by going to cemeteries and memorials. A countrywide moment of remembrance is held at 3 pm Washington time.
