Which Year Was The Bikini Accepted In Miss World?
Answers
The first-ever Miss World pageant, held in 1951, was called the Festival Bikini Contest in honour of the to-piece garment that had become the rage across Europe. It was organised by the Miss World Organisation (MWO), in the United Kingdom. The late Eric Morley was the founder and chairman of the MWO. However, protests against the indecent representation of women began to crop up in several conservative societies and the new from of swimwear was replaced by a more modest bathing suit. The first winner of the pageant in 1951, Sweden's Kiki Haakonson is the only person so far to be crowned Miss World wearing a two-piece bathing suit. It took the United States fifteen years to accept the bikini as part of the pop culture. It had already taken France (where it was invented in 1946) and the rest of Europe by storm, but the United States in the 1940's and 1950's was a pretty conservative society.
