Townes Van Zandt was born in Fort Worth in the state of Texas. He was even schooled there and was being prepared for the governorship of Texas before he dropped out of college. There is even a county that is named after his family in the state of Texas called the Van Zandt County.

During his young years he travelled extensively in the states of Colorado and Texas. Later in life during the 1970s he led a very reclusive life in a cabin in the state of Tennessee. The cabin had neither telephone nor plumbing.

Townes Van Zandt is sometimes referred to as the best folk singer ever by his fans. He died on the 1st of January 1997 after suffering from what is believed of a clot in his lungs. At the time of his death his daughter was at his side and in one hand he held a bottle of vodka.

Steve Earle (another brilliant singer-songwriter from Texas and a protege of Van Zandt's) is quoted as having said, "Townes Van Zandt is the best songwriter in America, and I will stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that." Van Zandt WAS an awesome talent.
