The accepted explanation about what happened to the dinosaurs is that a large meteor hit the earth and altered the environment to become an unsustainable place for the species. This is said to have taken place 65000 years ago. There are ancestors of dinosaurs that yet live among us. Birds are descended from them, lizards, and a few other creatures found here and there, and so the actual entirety of the species did not go extinct as such; however they are said to be extinct because the apparent majority of their sub-species did become extinct. Will they come back? In the book by Michael Crichton Jurassic Park we see the scenario of a clone being done of a dinosaur to create a new upsurgence of them. With the development of DNA research, this is possible if there is an acceptable level of usable DNA in existing specimens (doubtful due to the petrification process undergone by the fossils) and a friendly host (compatible in both size and environment) for the theoretically resultant embryo. They are said to have been egg layers, and this creates a question of if an egg could be fabricated for this to incubate. But the DNA by now is petrified. That means that it is no longer actually bone, but rock. We can't get water from a stone, so we might not be able to get DNA. I would say, that in their former form, there is no possibility for dinosaurs to return. But there are some other possibilities. We could ignore our environment and become them, and 65000 years hence some rather clever other species would wonder what wiped out humans. But on the lighter note, one thing you could refer to is a rhinoceros, and know that those ugly creatures didn't all die out. Someone once suggested to me also that an ostrich is an example of their descendants too.
