Wills give a much wider picture of the family than amy records.

Prior to 1857, the Church of Ireland or the Established Church was in charge of all testamentary affairs. The Church granted probate, authenticated wills, and confered power on executors to administer an estate, the church could also grant letters of administration.
If property was invilved amounting to over £5 in another diocese the church had to pass the case to the Prerogative Court.
After 1857 The Probate Act did away with the power of the church to administer wills. The Consistorial Court and Prerogative Court had power to grant probate and power to issue Letters of Administration was granted to the principle Registry in Dublin.
