How Large Is Australia's Great Sandy Desert?

The Great Sandy Desert is an arid region situated in the north western part of Australia; it extends from the Pilbara region of the state of Western Australia to the Kimberley region located in the same state covering an area of 360,000 sq km (223,700 sq miles)

The Great Sandy Desert is known for its harsh conditions characterized by frequent thunderstorms especially during the short monsoon season as well as high temperatures averaging 42 degree C (108 degree F) in the summer months. The area on account of the inhospitable conditions is uninhabited for the most parts with only the coastal desert regions being sparsely populated; the first European to traverse the desert was Peter Warburton when he accomplished the feat in 1873.  

Vegetation too is sparse and only desert grass known as Spinifex Triodoa grows in most parts; the Rudall River National Park and Lake Dora which are popular tourist spots lie in the southern part of the desert; the famous Canning Stock Route passes through the south eastern parts of the desert.
