It is important to waterproof a basement but it all depends upon the age of your home as to when you should do it.

Generally new houses tend to have fairly good waterproof protection already installed; however houses over twenty five years old should really be waterproofed every few years. This is because over time our houses shift naturally and their waterproofing abilities tend to wear down leaving them more vulnerable to the weather.

If your basement becomes damp it may not be a huge problem straight away, you may just notice a slight smell that is all. However, if left the problem can quickly worsen and you could end up with a mould problem as well as any furniture you have down there becoming ruined and eventually you could even end up with a pest problem. So overall it is definitely worth waterproofing your basement whenever you notice any cracks or holes down there.
