In his first conversation with Pharaoh/King of Egypt and ask that the Israelites/Jews/Hebrew people be set free, the King said that he would not because that their labor was needed in Egypt.
Because Moses said that the God of the Israelites had sent him to the King to set the people who worshipped God free to return to their homeland, the King/Pharaoh made their work harder to say that they could no longer have straw to use in making bricks and they still had to make the required quota. Straw was used to hold the clay together; therefore, making it easier to build bricks. To replace the straw, they had to take extra time to find 'stubble' so that made it even more difficult to make their quota.
The slaving Israelites became angry with Moses because every time he met with Pharaoh, they were beaten, called lazy by the taskmasters. Some of them even wanted to kill Moses.
Moses asked God why He let the Egyptian taskmasters demand more work and beat the Israelites more than usual. God said that Moses and the people must have patience and watch to see what He had planned to do to Pharaoh to cause him to obey His message given through Aaron and Moses.
