The Great Lakes situated in the north eastern part of the United States on the US-Canada border are one of the major fresh water bodies on Earth. The names of the 5 Great Lakes are Lake Superior, Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan and Lake Ontario. The Great Lakes contain much of the fresh water supply on Earth (more than 20%) and only Lake Baikal in Russia contains more by volume.

The Great Lakes are used for transport and freight purposes and are the backbone of the economies of the surrounding states. Currently there are various issues related to pollution resulting due to various reasons like increased settlement affecting the lake which need to be addressed.
