It is unclear how many people die from being struck by lighting, however, research carried into lighting strikes have shown that more men than woman get struck. In a study called Demographics of U.S. Lighting Casualties and Damages from 1959 - 1994, it showed that men were four more times as likey to get hit by lighting than woman. The study showed that the reason could be that it is possibly due to the amount of testosterone in the male - that or that more men than women foolishly spend time outside when there is a thunder and lighting storm!
Men can take comfort in the fact that the actual number of fatalities caused by lighting strikes has decreased in the past 35 years. This is partially due to improved information in relation to lighting and its effects.
A typical electrical shock will give a human a shock of between 20 - 63 kilovolts. when lighting strikes a human, it can give a human a shock of up to 300 kilovolts!
If you survive a shock you may still have to deal with the consequences of the damage that might be caused by it, such as kidney damage, infection or muscle damage.
If you really want to experience what a lighting strike can do to the human body the place to go is golfing in Florida where it has the highest recorded deaths and injuries from lighting strikes.
