Penzance had its fair share of famous people, the most famous of course being Sir Humphrey Davy who in 1815, invented and built a safety lamp for miners( known as the Davy lamp).
Another very famous man was Thomas Holloway who started out by selling pills and ointments and the sales of these products made him not just a multi-millionaire but also one of the richest men in England at that time.
Humphrey Davy's brother, John Davy was a doctor and an amateur chemist who discovered that all eggshells have pores that facilitate a flow of oxygen in to the egg while allowing carbon dioxide to flow out. Andrew Ketcham Barnett was yet another scientist from Penzance. Simon A. Forward is a well known author and dramatist. He is most famous for his Doctor Who spin-offs. Jan Harvey, the actress (from the BBC drama Howard's Way) was born in Penzance. The politician Caroline Jackson from the Conservative party is from Penzance.
