They are good and bad. Some bring minerals and gases that can be used industrially, like sulfur, basalt and diamonds. Ash also makes farming and agriculture very easy because it is extremely fertile. Volcanoes, for example in New Zealand, make popular skiing resorts and tourist attractions. Of course, it is not all good. Eruptions, ash clouds and pyroclastic flows can destroy entire towns.
