Who Starred In "George And Mildred"?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

George and Mildred were the unpleasant landlords in the sitcom "Man About the House." Played by Brian Murphy and Yootha Joyce, the basement-dwelling couple were so popular with audiences that they were given their own show in 1976. For this, they were upgraded to a suburban home in Hampton Wick. The basis of the comedy was the mismatch between lazy, unloving and defiantly proletarian George ("I'm working class and bloody proud of it") and the sexually and socially frustrated Mildred, who aspires to higher things. Further comic conflict is created by the couple's relationship with their middle-class neighbours, Jeffrey and Anna Fourmile (Norman Eshley and Sheila Fearn) whose young son (Nicholas Bond-Owen) George enjoys teaching to swear and gamble, while Mildred eagerly pursues a horrified Jeffrey. Written by Brian Cooke and Johnnie Mortimer, the show ran for a total of 38 episodes and was later remade for American audiences as "The Ropers."
