Colon enlargement commonly coincides with colon infections. Sometimes if your colon becomes inflamed from irritation, it will become enlarged. If you suffer from Parkinson’s disease, have nerve damage, or regularly use narcotics, your colon can become very enlarged. In any case, you ought to see a doctor. Illnesses that relate to the colon are often very serious. Your doctor can determine the level of dilation and the reason why your colon is enlarged. A doctor can also find relief or treatment for your condition. If you want to see a specialist in this field, make an appointment with a proctologist.

Something as simple as constipation can cause the colon to be enlarged.  Constipation can be treated with over-the-counter laxatives or by consuming a large amount of fibre (preferably soluble fibre to prevent irritation to the colon.) Diets that include high amounts of fruit and vegetables can prevent constipation. Constipation should only be temporary, so if it lasts longer than a few days, see a doctor immediately.

Sometimes your colon can be enlarged if there is something obstructing your bowels. This would make moving around uncomfortable or even painful. This type of problem usually is treated with bowel irrigation. Chronic bowel obstructions can be caused by Hirchsprung’s disease. In this condition, the muscles that are responsible for aiding in bowel movements do not work properly. Mild and chronic bowel obstructions need to be examined by a doctor.

People with diverticulitis and diverticulosis have enlarged colons. Diverticulosis is a condition where small pouches form along the colon wall. Diverticulitis ensues if these pouches become inflamed or infected.  Diverticulitis can cause your colon to tear and bleed. In both conditions, the colon becomes larger than normal. Both of these conditions are very painful, but diverticulitis is extremely painful. Both are medical conditions that must be treated by a doctor.

Enlargement or dilation of colon can be alrming. The two main reasons for making colon to become enlarged include Hirschsprung's and megacolon disease. In the Toxic Megacolon, dilated colon is complained. It is a life threatening complication and also includes abdominal distension. Secondly, Hirschsprung's disease can cause enlargement of colon.
