A dome is basically a kind of structural element of a type of structure. It looks more like a hollow upper portion of a sphere. They are not necessarily supposed to be in a cross section, but it could be more like a section all the way through an ellipse. A dome, which is generally really very low, could be more in a shape like a saucer. The surface of any dome is generally in a curved form.

The first ever dome that came into existence was Sant'Andrea in via Flaminia often called Sant'Andrea del Vignola, which was erected by Vignola for a small chapel. This dome was commissioned in 1552 by Julius III. In the western side the most very well known dome is the one that is built in the Renaissance are namely, St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and Jules Hardouin-Mansart's dome at Les Invalides in Paris.
