Shareware is a programming idea where you "try" the program or software, or "Share" it with the author. Then if you want to keep using the program, you pay for it, usually to the author.
It has been used as a way for a computer programmer to write programs, and not have to spend a lot of money marketing it. It has been very successful over the years with good shareware programs making a lot of money for the guy, or group that wrote it.
