There are so many kinds of blankets...I unfortunately cannot afford them all for the 3 that I currently have. It depends a lot on the horse. Speaking only of mine and the ones I have right now are pleasure horses. I have one that is 9 and he does not seem to get the thick mammoth elephant coat as the younger ones. He has a thick waterproof "turnout" blanket. I use a canvas lighter one in the spring to help him shed out his winter coat so that he does not sweat as badly when the sun beats down on him. Our mare is 4 and she is lucky to have the very thick coat and with the shelter of the barn, oats and special pelleted feed that we give her she is able to produce enough heat running around and eating hay she has never required a blanket, not even in the below freezing temps we had this year. The same with her 2 year old son. He was lucky to get this from her. Besides he would probably tear his off just playing with the 9 year old gelding who thinks he is still a stallion. I have friends and acquaintances that have blankets they put on their horses that they show even when they are put in to their stalls at night. I believe that it truly depends on the breed of horse and what they are used for. If my horses depended on blankets for warmth all the time and were ever sold to someone else that did not have them they would become ill in the winter, from being used to that type of treatment. If you have time go to any site that deals with tack, blankets, etc. It is amazing just how many types of blankets and accessories their are.
