When Was Chichester Cathedral's Spire Rebuilt?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The spire of the Cathedral was rebuilt in the 19th century. The rebuilding was done immediately after the collapse of the spire on February 21, 1861.Earlier, the cathedral had a spire, but it was built of local stone and was quite a weak structure. Owing to the structure being so weak it got collapsed and had to be rebuilt.

This cathedral is considered to be quite unusual in the United Kingdom. It is noticed that unlike the usual practice, the cathedral had separate bell towers only at a few meters distance from the main building and is not integrated in it.

This Cathedral is a dedication to Holy Trinity and it has a shrine of Saint Richard of Chichester also. He was a bishop in the 16th century and also considered as the patron saint of the city.
