This series of novels is so called because they all feature a character called Plantagenet Palliser. The first, "Can You Forgive Her?" was published in 1864. A wealthy young woman, Alice Vavasour, abandons her virtuous suitor, John Grey, for her unreliable cousin George. Despite her attempts to help him into a political career, George is a failure. He later leaves fro America and Alice finally marries John Grey.
A subplot concerns the marriage of Alice's friend Lady Glencora, to Plantagenet Pallisser. She is tempted to elope with someone else, but Palliser takes her abroad, the marriage improves and a son is born. At the same time Palliser's political career is blossoming; in fact he is offered the post of Chancellor of the Exchequer. This series of novels is sometimes called the "political novels" since party politics are important in all of them; this reflects Trollope's own interest in politics and one-time attempt at a Parliamentary career.
