Why Would Self-inflicting Become Addicting?
Why would self-inflicting become addicting? I'm sure there is a mess of reasons, as reasons for self-infliction vary from each person who commits it. But is there a typical explanation?

Self-inflicting, also known as SIB (self-injurious behavior ) is a borderline mental disorder, a way to cope with emotional pain, and is totally curable if you seek help. Besides cutting, body-piercing and tattooing are also considered self-injury, although the latter two may also contain the attention-seeking element. But the root causes are similar: Low self-esteem, depression, trauma, self-loathing, and so forth that have to be dealt with before one can truly stop this behavial addiction.
Another cause for the addiction may be due to the release of endorphin, which is a powerful chemical produced by your body to block pain from injuries. It has a similar effect to morphine, and it gives you a sense of well being, a feeling of euphoria, a "rush" and soon your body craves more and more of it and you are "hooked". This is a chemical addiction caused by behavior which helps to drive you even further downward.
Please seek help. It is an illness---there is no shame associated with it.

Usually it is a type of attention seeking mechanism. when the person gets the attention he or she seeks then their bad behaviour has been rewarded. so the more attention and sympathy the harmer receives the more the behaviour is reinforced.

self inflicting is an addiction that is really hard to stop. when someone who is self inflicting to them it is just like a high. when they r in so much pain and hurting a lot it takes all of there pain away.

It becomes addicting because the more someone causes external pain, the easier it is to ignore the internal pain. I am a cutter and I don't like it. But it is like any other drug: You become high and it takes you to a totally different reality. You become addicted to the fact that something can take your pain away, if only for a little while.

It's not so much addictive. It's more not knowing how to deal with your emotions in another way. Once you start you realise it will make you feel better for a tiny short while. After you've done it, it only gives you more problems (having to hide it, being disappointed in yourself, downward spiral etc). Because it works for a few seconds people will do it again. Cos a few seconds is always better than nothing. One just needs to stop cold-turkey and find other ways, or try avoid the situations where one feels the need to cut.

Yes, I agree with Next; please talk to someone about your cutting episodes because they can be stopped. You mention you have found another way to deal with issues. What is this other method you are referring to?

Hi awasnoved,
I'm sorry to hear that you have a cutting issue. This is never a good sign and you can get an infection.
The truth of the matter is that it makes you feel good because it is your way of dealing with stress.
I have personally known one cutter who started cutting when I had my hysterectomy in 2002, and I am ashamed to tell you that the cutter is my daughter.
I was very ill and all the attention was on me and she became VERY stressed about the situation and no one was there to help her. Now that I am aware of the situation I know that I should have taken better care of her and given her more attention at that time, but I just couldn't because I was in too much pain. God forgive me.
Please, get help. You can overcome this issue.
Be sure to let me know how you are doing.
Please accept my blessings for a WONDERFUL holiday season.
My thoughts and prayers will be with you all day every day.
