How Can I Make My Own Beeswax Soap?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The ingredients for beeswax soap are 1 ounce of grated beeswax, 6 ounces of olive oil, 6 ounces of coconut oil, 9 1/2 ounces of tallow, 3 1/2 ounces of lye (sodium hydroxide), 8 ounces of distilled water, and 2 teaspoons of the essential oil of your choice.

Heat the water to almost boiling and add the lye.  Wait for the lye mixture to cool to about 160 degrees F.  Melt the beeswax in a glass bowl set in hot water.  Weigh and combine the oils and tallow, then add the melted beeswax to this mixture.  Heat the oil/wax/tallow mixture to about 130 degrees F and slowly pour the lye water into this while stirring.  Stir for about 20 minutes, then add essential oils.

Pour the mixture into soap molds and harden the molds in the freezer for about 3 hours.  Unmold your soap and, using rubber gloves, place the bars on plain brown paper to age for about two weeks before using.  It's important to age the soap before use, because the mixture is too harsh at first and needs to mellow, or it will cause irritation.
