    Progesterone is a type of a steroid hormone that is involved in the female menstrual cycle; it is also involved in pregnancy and the embryogenesis of humans and other species. The progesterone belongs to the class of hormones which are known as progestogens. It is a naturally occurring human progestogen. Progestin's and progesterone are very different from each other; the progestin's are synthetically produced progestogens.

    In women it is said that the level of progesterone's are comparatively low during the time of the menstrual cycle. In the human body the production of progesterone takes place in the adrenal glands, it is also formed in the brain, the gonads and during the time of pregnancy they are formed in the placenta. In a term a placenta produces around 250 mg of progesterone per day.
