Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Treaty of Ghent was signed on Christmas Eve, the 24th December 1814, in Ghent, in Belgium.  This treated ended the war between the United States of America and the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Both sides sent their negotiators to Ghent, the American negotiators acted with full authority but the British and Irish contingent had to keep going back and forth or awaiting word from their masters in London.

Once it was signed, fighting stopped abruptly.  However the American troops continued to fight in New Orleans, forcing a major victory against the British troops in January 1815.

As part of the treaty, Britain agreed to return any slaves that they had captured, but a few years later, they paid a price of £250,000 for them instead.

Soon after the entire agreement had been ratified, Napoleon escaped from his island jail and the British became fully involved in a European war once more.
