When last in London, I asked the Cingular service about using their sim card on my Sprint phone.
You've got to get the card to match the phone.
Many travelers purchase a new phone wherever they go because of this delima.
Unless in Europe, their phones seem to be more standard, versatile and of a higher standard than ours in the US......
