    According to the etymology dictionary, the word deplorable originates from "melancholy".  Circa 1303, meaning a condition characterized by sullenness, gloom, irritability, from melancholie, from Latin melancholia, from Greek melankholia, meaning sadness, sense of deplorable (of a fact or state of things) is from 1710.  Hope this helps and good luck!
