In today's world packaging is gaining a lot of importance because of the convenience it provides in terms of price and less volume occupation. User have come to expect packaging that is attractive, easy to use, and protects the product. While no package can improve a bad product, many good products do not have success in the marketplace because of the wrong package design.
The barrier properties of the film are key to any flexible packaging project. It is important to have the right barrier for the right substances to maintain product performance over the life of the product. However, barrier properties are just one aspect of the flexible package design process. Barrier resins are continuing to play an important role not just in preserving the product but as an integral part of the overall structure.
The distribution time is a key factor in determining what the "shelf life" needs to be. In developed nations, distribution time has decreased significantly due to improved efficiency in the distribution system. However, as the marketplace continues to expand globally, the distribution time increases and the variety of environments that the package is exposed to increases. Therefore barrier requirements are increasing for many products. Also, products continue to evolve with more complex barrier requirements. The consumer is also asking for more convenience including "on-the-go" foods which have a higher packaging/product ratio and smaller package sizes.
