Can Drinking Coffee Reveal Your Politics?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Well it can in Cyprus. Taking coffee in a Cypriot village is for the 'view', but not for the scenery. It is tied to a political view and by sitting in one of four cafés in the village square you will express affiliation with the socialist EDEK party; the Liberal Conservative Democratic Party, DIKO; The Conservative Democratic Rally, DISY; or the Communist, AKEL.
Just as in the UK people, in effect, vote by proxy when they buy a newspaper – this one Labour, this one Tory – so Cypriots express their alignment when they buy, for example, brandy produced by a co-operative or by a private firm; home-grown coffee against imported, or even by the football club they support.
A victory by Omonia Nicosia won't draw any Conservative cheers because of its political affiliation with the Communists. However if Olympiakos were to win, it is a victory for the right. Scottish football might suggest religious ties – in Cyprus it is politics.
Politically there is a sharp divide between Conservatives and Communists on Cyprus although none of the voters gives the appearance of being extreme. Villages historically tend to vote one way or the other.

Assuming you are not referring to Cyprus, I wouldn't think so.  At least not in the US.  Americans drink coffee for other reasons.  I rarely drink coffee.  What could that possibly say about my politics?
