A perforation is basically a hole that is made by puncturing a surface. Apart from being referred to holes in the ground it refers to also making or poking into long sequence of holes so that paper can be torn more easily. A perfect example is that of a postage stamps that generally have small round holes that are cut into different lines so that individual stamps are easier to tear out. It refers to something that has small holes an in the case of paper, holes are made so as to make the paper easier to tear away.
