We are born with a thyroid gland, which is one of the larger endocrine glands in our body. The thyroid gland is located in the neck, and sits just below our "Adam's apple" it has two lobes. It produces hormones called throxine(T4) and Triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones help regulate our metabolism. Another hormone produced by the thyroid is calcitonin, which controls the calcium levels in our blood. Iodine within the thyroid is necessary to produce the hormones.
Sometimes a person can develop a disease of the thyroid called hyperthyroidism, (the thyroid is overactive) or a disease called hypothyroidism, which means (the thyroid is under active). There are other diseases, which can prevent the thyroid from functioning as it should. However, Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism are the most common and are not rare diseases.
Sometimes, the thyroid gland shows signs of swelling, the doctor will run test to determine, if there is reason for treatment. Normally, stress would not be a cause of a thyroid disease, however an overactive thyroid can cause someone to become hyperactive. The thyroid is in stress and this causes the person to sometimes become nervous, irritable or feel stressed. An underactive thyroid can cause a person to feel tired, irritable and even become depressed.
Often, when people discuss any of these symptoms with their physician, he/she will order some tests related to the thyroid. If, there is a problem of hyper or hypo thyroidism, these are treatable, usually with daily medication.

I never thought at the age of 31 I would be battling with hyperthyroid problems. It all started by diet pills trying to lose weight. Then losing over 35lbs, acid reflex, inlarged heart, and a very irritating cough. I'm so scared and lost hope.
