Tell Me About St. Paul's Cathedral In London?
Answers
It's an ancient site of religious worship.
The cathedral standing there today was designed by Sir Christopher Wren, who also designed another 50 or so churches. But this is considered his masterpiece.
Wren made several designs for the Cathedral before one was decided upon.
The previous Cathedral burnt down in 1665. Construction started on the current building in 1675.
The first religious service held in the current building was in 1697.
The current building was completed in 1710.
The metal ball and cross on top of the dome reach a height of 365 above the ground.
Wren died at the age of 91, after catching a chill during a visit to his masterpiece. He is entombed inside it.
The cathedral's greatest feature is generally said to be its central Dome and Lantern. The Dome that you see externally is much smaller than the painted Dome that you see internally.
The building was ringed by fire in December 1940, but miraculously survived WWII relatively unscathed.
