What Is High Tea?

Answer Question

High tea is actually a substantial meal, eaten in the early evening (around 6-7 pm.) Unlike afternoon tea, an elegant snack associated with leisure, high tea was often the main meal of the day for people who had been working hard. It was often associated with poorer families, though for many years it was popular with all income groups. High tea usually includes sandwiches and cake, but also a range of hot savouries like cheese on toast, crumpets and Scotch eggs. It's also common to find cold meat, cheese and pickle – and, of course, a large pot of strong tea. In some areas, especially northern England, many people still refer to their evening meal as "tea" (whereas in the south it's usually "dinner") even though nowadays most people's evening meal consists of some combination of cooked meat and vegetables.
High tea can still be found in some hotels, though it is less common now than afternoon tea or its rural variant, the cream tea.
