Xerography is Greek Word Xero means "dry" and "graphos" means writing. Hence Xerography means dry writing or photocopying. The major parts of photocopier machine are lamp, toner cartridge, heated rollers and lens.

The main part or heart of photocopier machine is an aluminum cylinder coated with a thin layer of selenium. Aluminum is a good conductor, whereas selenium is an insulator in the darkness and it becomes conductor when exposed to light. Or selenium is photoconductor.
Positively charge material is sprinkled over the selenium. This charge remains on the surface of the cylinder till it remains in darkness. And when light falls on the cylinder, then selenium coating emits photoelectrons, which carry negative charge, and neutralize the positive charge already sprinkled on the surface of cylinder.

When an image is formed on the surface of cylinder, when it is being exposed to light, then at the position of image positive charge is not shadow of the image remains insulating while reaming are of cylinder on which light is falling becomes conducting and neutralizes positive charge and becomes electrically neutral.

The toner is black powder, which is negatively charged and is spread over the drum. The black powder sticks with the image area due to positive charge on it. This toner is then transferred on to the sheet of paper on which document is to be copied. After this hot rollers then melt the toner into the paper to give permanent impression of image of document.

Xerography's synonym is electro photography. Xerography is the name given to a unique photocopying technique. This method of photocopying was invented or fashioned by Chester Carlson. The year in which this techniques was generated in 1938 but it was patented in 1942, sixth of October to be more precise!

In reality, the word "xerography" originated by two Greek words namely: - "Xerox" which means dry and "graphos" which is interpreted ad writing. In xerography, there is absolutely no need for liquid chemicals unlike many old and primitive photocopying methods.

The process of xerography is extensively used in photocopier machines and devices, laser printers and LED printers.
You might be fascinated to know that xerography is also made use of in animation. A person by the name of Ub Iwerks succeeded after much hard work in using xerography to get rid of the hand-inking stage in the animation process. He managed to accomplish this task by printing the animators drawing directly to the cells.

I must mention again that photocopying machines make the most use of this process. Vital stages are recorded or observed by a photocopying machine when we witness a piece of document being photocopied. The vital processes are as follows:-
      1-Charging
      2-Exposure
      3-Development
      4-Transfer
      5-Peeling
      6-Fusing
      7-Cleaning
