Do Camels Store Water In Their Humps?

Answer Question

4 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Despite the popular idea that after a long drink at the oasis, the water somehow migrates to their hump, Dromedary; or humps, Bactrian; it is untrue. Their humps contain fat which is used as a source of energy.
They store water throughout their bodies, particularly in the bloodstream. This makes the camel extremely efficient at avoiding dehydration. A camel might loose up to 40 per cent of its weight before its body becomes at all distressed by this. It can go a full week without a drink but when it does, it sops up about 50 gallons.
Camels have a strange psyche that can build up resentment towards humans. The pressure builds until the camel blows its top. An experienced handler simply removes his coat and gives it to the camel to take out it frustrations on it. The enraged animal will bite it, stamp on it and generally maul it until it has got the whole thing out of its system. Then it puts it all in the past and goes back to a normal relationship.
