Do Squirrels Hibernate?

Answer Question

4 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Many species of ground squirrel like the flickertail hibernate in winter. They hibernation generally lasts for five to six months of the year. On the other hand tree squirrels are active throughout. However, they are not seen around as they prefer snuggle up with their family in their warm cozy nests and thus conserve body heat. Squirrels tend to spend all their lives within an area of three to five acres. If there is a short warm spell, tree squirrels will emerge briefly to replenish their stores. Squirrels can sense the slightest change in weather and bury nuts in underground stores or even indulge in a spot of binge-eating.

Arctic ground squirrels live through the coldest winters. They go into hibernation and their bodies cool to below freezing temperature as their bodies all but shut down. There are some scientists that are trying to understand their super-cooling talents in the hope of assisting long-distance space travel as well as finding a cure or prevention for strokes.
