Out of the 40 most of the theatres play world famous plays. It is said that after the invention of lighting, theatre production in New York City took a sudden boost. During the early 1880's the Broadway and 42nd Street started showing a different side of theatre known as the musical. During that time these theatres mainly showcased productions which were based along the lines of hope and ambition.
The most famous theatre production in New York to this day has been 'The Phantom of the Opera' which is currently being showcased at the majestic theatre. The Phantom of the Opera was first showcased in the late 1980's and it still remains as one of the cult classics in the history of theatre production.
