    Wilbur Smith, considered as one of the best-selling writers, pursues his writing skills in adventure and fiction.  Smith follows a series, or rather a sequence for his works of fiction.  This particular sequence deals with the Courtney Family and their lives within a specific time frame.

    Triumph of the Sun, is the last book falling in the third sequence.  Like all the other books, 'Triumph of the Sun' revolves around Ryder Courtney.  A British trader and businessman by profession, Ryder Courtney is strangled in the capital city of Khartoum, in Sudan.  The year is 1884, and in Sudan, the era witnesses' decades of brutal bloodshed under the regime of the Egyptian Khedive which results into a Holy War. In order to siege the city of Khartoum, the enigmatic religious leader, Mahdi or the "Guiding One" prepares an army constituting of Arab warlords.  

    In order to protect their national interest, the British are forced to make an attempt in order to rescue their citizens strangled in Sudan. During his times in Sudan, Ryder meets Captain Panrod Ballantyne; who is a skilled swordsman and a soldier of the 10th Hussar. He also meets the British Consul David Benbrook and his three daughters. These three men Ryder Courtney, Captain Panrod Ballantyne, and David Benbrook have to rebel against the fierce forces of the Arabs in order to survive. Wilbur Smith weaves the story with historical events and also with his inimitable style of fictitious writing, which makes it a must read for fans of fiction.
