How Did Jigsaw Puzzles Start And When Were They Most Popular?

Answer Question

The first jigsaw puzzle was made to educate children in geography. John Spilsbury who was a mapmaker and printer mounted a map onto wood and cut out pieces along the country borders, which was a rather good idea teaching children not only which country fit in where, but the country shapes themselves.

It took about a hundred years for jigsaw puzzles to become popular as general entertainment and with the advancements in die cutting, they could be mass produced rather then each made by hand.

During the 1920-30's jigsaw puzzles were a great inexpensive form of entertainment that could involve the whole family for hours. Then, once broken apart, puzzles could be recycled and passed on to another family member or friend. Besides for their affordability during the depression, jigsaw puzzles were also found helpful in reducing stress!

With today's computer technology, desktop puzzles are all the rage. Check out
