He was a famous 20th century American writer and playwright.

His real first name was Thomas, but he got the nickname Tennessee from his birthplace and strong southern accent.  He lived most of his life in Missouri, Louisiana and other parts of the American south.

His early family life was troubled: he was afflicted by diptheria, his father was abusive, his mother hovering and over-protective.  Williams had a beloved sister, Rose, who was diagnosed schizophrenic.  She suffered a botched lobotomy which left her incapable for the rest of her life.

In his life he wrote nearly 80 plays, published 3 novels, 2 volumes of poetry and 7 short stories.  His most famous plays are probably A Streetcar named Desire, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

    He was also
    A sufferer of DEPRESSION.

GAY, once a victim of gay-bashing (being beaten up) in Florida in1979.

An ADDICT: he died in 1983, at the age of 71, by choking on a bottle cap.  It's believed that alcohol and excess prescription drugs inhibited the usual gag reflex.
