What Does Spline Mean?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A spline consists of a long strip that is fixed in its position at a number of different points; it relaxes to form a smooth curve which passes through those points.

The word spline can also stand for a series of ridges on a drive shaft, which equalizes the rotation speed of the mating piece, thus transferring the torque. Manufacturer typically cut such types of splines with a broach. The spline devices also help bend the wood for pianos, violins and violas and other such stuff.
