The tiny fungus that is responsible for ringworm can be transferred from infected animals, or other humans through skin to skin contact. It can also survive and be transferred from inanimate objects, clothing, or from floors that are contaminated, so people do not necessarily need to be in very close contact with an infected person in order to contract it. Children are very susceptible to it, and it caused by a fungus similar to that which causes athlete's foot, but once someone is being treated, it is considered safe to be in contact with others.
