Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

As a noun, advantage could refer to either a single beneficial factor or more often a combination of such factors. It is used to mean benefit or profit; it is a gain: It could be a position that is relatively favorable; or a superiority of means. In sporting terms, it could refer to the first point that is scored in tennis right after a deuce; or the resulting score.
It comes from the Middle English word advantage; from Old French; it has its roots in avant, meaning before; from the Latin word abante, meaning from before.
As a transitive verb it means to benefit, that is, to afford profit or gain. Some related idioms include 'to take advantage of', meaning putting to good use or availing oneself. It could also be used negatively to mean profiting selfishly by, or exploiting. Another idiom is 'to advantage', meaning to good effect; or favorably.
