The idea is that you can lose up to 10 lbs a year just by spending an extra hour a day in bed. It sounds like a joke, but it isn't just related to not having as much time to be eating...

It comes down to hormones. When you are awake, your body thinks you should be eating. When your body is in sleep mode, the digestive system turns off. The hormones involved are ghrelin and leptin. Ghrelin gets released by the stomach to tell you when you're hungry. It only gets released when you're awake. Less time awake, means less hungry feelings.

Leptin is released by fat cells to tell your body how much fat you have stored up. This in turn influences how much ghrelin and other hunger- and energy-related hormones you have in your blood. Leptin levels get disrupted by too little sleep, too.
